Name: Mads (birthname is Michael Coen)
Age: 29
Canon: Original character
Canon Point: After Anna is captured
World Information: Description of New America.
Personality:
On the outside, Mads is very calm and sophistocated. He is very refined and likes his surroundings to reflect that. You might say he's a touch OCD, as you'll see him constantly arranging (or rearranging) various items, ranging from pictures on the wall to the items on his desk out of compulsion. He keeps his personal affects very neat and orderly. He is very rigid and adheres to a schedule and ensures his hired help knows how things are supposed to go. Deviations from this schedule tend to make Mads angry and are grounds for immediate dismissal. He's gone through 17 assistants that way.
He seems very pleasant, but extremely intimidating, because he is very condescending when he's talking to people. He has a very low opinion of people in general and he's very quick to judge on a glance. Anyone he feels is unworthy of his time or attention are usually brushed aside without a second thought. Misfits are especially low on the totem pole to Mads. He refers to them as 'it' and ignores the hypocrisy of this mindset. As for Anna, Mads is obsessed with her. To the point that her capture has consumed a great portion of his life. He would do anything to take her down, even if that meant going down with her.
He is very cunning and always seems to know what someone is thinking. What makes him dangerous, however, is the fact that Mads has very little regard for human life. If a person is standing in the way of something he wants, he has no problem pushing them aside. He's power hungry and obsessive, but can be a fairly decent person to know. If you can get on his good side. And stay there. Good luck with that.
Background:
Michael's parents were young when they met, impetuous and ready to take on the world. They were married not more than six months after meeting. They had on a number of occasions applied for a permit to have children and were denied each and every time. His parents were a far cry from the richest people, but their home was...stable. Or as stable as a cramped one bedroom apartment could get. They were happy, at least. Unfortunately, happiness wasn't on the list of requirements for a child permit.
Despite the refusal of their request, Michael's parents were bound, set, and determined to have a baby of their own. Born in the spring of 2042, Michael Coen was just one of the many illegal babies born in the inner city of New Detroit. His birth had been relatively easy, considering the conditions. He was born on the kitchen floor of his parents' tiny apartment. His mother became very ill shortly after his birth, partly due to the unsanitary conditions and mostly because her Misfit abilities were starting to manifest themselves. The couple discussed what they would do and agreed they would keep her abilities secret and not get involved with the conflict.
Michael's father found steady work in construction and even though the pay wasn't much, they managed to scrape by a meager living and for a while, the little illegal family was happy. Of course, that wasn't meant to last.
When Michael was five, his mother...well she began distancing herself from the family. Staying out all hours of the night, sometimes not coming home for days. At first, her husband suspected her of having an affair. But when he found out the truth, he found himself wishing he had been right about the affair. Instead she had involved herself in the very conflict they had agreed to stay out of.
It became clear very quickly that the Misfit's cause was becoming more important than the family she had so desperately wanted, that she had broken the law to have. The peaceful home was quickly becoming volatile. Michael was a constant witness to their fights. His father also began filling the boy's head with Misfit propoganda. He was told they were horrible beasts who should be dealt with, that his mother loved them more than she loved him. Michael began to resent Misfits then, for taking her away from him.
This began his fascination with the Facility. He would linger by the building on his way to and from school, read any news that circulated about Misfits being captured by the Facility. And then one night, when Michael was about twelve years old, two men in white came to his house and took his mother away. The commotion it caused woke the boy and he watched from the top of the stairs while they dragged his mother away. This was the last time Michael saw her for several years. Part of him was glad she was gone. Misfits deserved their fate.
Things began to change drastically once Michael's mother taken. His father was offered a promotion and was able to move his son out of the inner city and into a nicer place. And much to Michael's delight, it was closer to a Facility building and he would sit outside watching the goings on for hours on end.
After high school, Michael promptly disappeared from New Detroit.
At about 19 years old, Michael was beset with something similar to a migrane. Painkillers were taken to no avail and soon, it left him bedridden for about a week. The pain was later accompanied by the whispered thoughts of other people. It was loud at first, crowded and noisy inside of his head. But with training and discipline, Mads was able to sort out and filter the voices that didn't matter. It was soon quiet once more and his headache was gone. With this relief, came a horrifying realization. He was a Misfit too. This knowledge would become his most guarded secret.
He found himself in California for about 5 years, attending a university he had managed to manipulate his way into, using his gift. There he studied biochemistry and graduated top of his class with his bachelor's. To pay for all of this, Michael manipulated his way into a job at the local Facility branch. When Michael was 26, he managed to land a job as an intern at the Facility where his mother was being held. He took the job without any hesitation and returned to New Detroit quietly. He saw his mother again for the first time in years. She looked decrepit and hollow from the years of experimentation. She did not recognize Michael at first, her vision having been severely impaired. But he addressed her coldly with two words: Hello, Mother.
Her joy at seeing her son again quickly gave way to puzzlement as he obviously wanted nothing to do with her. On his 27th birthday two very important things happened to Michael: He was promoted to the head of the experimental department. He also watched his mother die that day after a particularly violent experiment. She looked up at him and asked him if he was mad. He simply smiled and said nothing.
After his promotion, Michael had his name legally changed. Michael was stricken from the public record and Mads was born. And he was going to rid New Detroit of Misfits for good.
Mads gained quite the reputation in the years that followed. His methods were cruel and the experiments conducted in his Facility branch were brutal. Misfits from New Detroit and the surrounding cities had heard of him and wanted him dead. Assasination attempts were carried out, but never quite successful, though one left a heavy scar under his left eye.
This intensified his efforts to rid New Detroit of Misfits all together. That was when his attention turned to Anna Dominguez. She was at the forefront to the Misfits' cause and Mads knew if he could take her down, the rest would follow suit. She eluded him for months and this frustrated him to end. Her capture became something like a personal mission for him. He obsessed over her for weeks, digging into her past and even going so far as to bringing her mother flowers every Sunday. All of this and more was kept in a thick file he carried with him everywhere. And then one morning he recieved wonderful news. She had been captured.
She was brought before him, an IV stuck in her arm. And he smiled as he explained what he intended to do to her. After she was lead away to be tagged in placed in a cage, Mads left to go home. There was nothing in the world that was going to ruin his good mood. Unfortunately, he never made it home. He was swept away to Holloway's Keep instead.
Inventory: His clothes and his briefcase. The briefcase contains files from various Misfits, including the file he has on Anna.
